UK: No Screens Before Age 2 – Up to One Hour a Day for Children Under 5

The British government has issued official recommendations regarding children's screen time, proposing to avoid screens before the age of two and limit it to one hour a day for children aged two to five. The guidelines aim to protect children from the harmful effects of excessive screen exposure, such as sleep disturbances, reduced physical activity, and limited interaction with parents. The recommendations also suggest avoiding screen use during meals or before bedtime, as well as having an adult present during use whenever possible. Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the government will not leave parents to face the challenge of managing their children's screen time alone. These measures are based on a report highlighting that prolonged screen time can harm basic developmental activities. Parents want clear and non-judgmental information about the risks of screen time and ways to set limits. Furthermore, the government is considering banning social media for people under the age of 16, as Australia has already done, as well as banning addictive features such as endless scrolling. From July 2025, websites and platforms will be required to implement strict age verification to protect minors from inappropriate content.
