UK Considers Ban on Social Media for Under-16s

The UK is considering an immediate ban on the use of social media by children under 16, following Australia's example. This move aims to close a legal loophole that leaves some Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots outside of safety regulations, as part of the government's effort to address digital risks. The government of Keir Starmer has launched a consultation on the ban and is working to amend legislation to achieve changes within months. Spain, Greece and Slovenia have also expressed their intention to follow suit. The need for the ban intensified after it was revealed that Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, generated sexualized images without consent. Pressure on social media platforms is increasing globally. The UK will also strengthen the 2023 Online Safety Bill to cover interaction with AI chatbots. In addition, measures will be considered to protect children from "stranger pairing" on game consoles and the sending/receiving of images with nude content.
