UK, EU, and Japan Demand Immediate Release of Jimmy Lai

The UK, the EU, and Japan are calling for the immediate release of Jimmy Lai, the former media mogul and critic of China, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in Hong Kong for collusion with foreign forces and inciting rebellion. Lai, a British citizen, denies the charges and claims he is a political prisoner. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed the UK’s support for the people of Hong Kong and announced that further measures would be taken. The EU described the prosecution of Lai as politically motivated and called for the restoration of trust in freedom of the press in Hong Kong. Japan expressed concern about the potential impact of the sentence on freedom of speech. China defended the conviction, stating that the Hong Kong judicial organs did their duty and that the central government supports the protection of national security. The official Xinhua news agency commented that the verdict serves as a warning to those who endanger the stability of Hong Kong. The head of the Hong Kong government, John Lee, described the sentence as “deeply satisfying” and stressed that Lai’s crimes are heinous and serious.
