Cyprus Archaeological Heritage Award Goes to Alain Le Brun and Odile Daune-Le Brun

The Cyprus Archaeological Heritage Award was presented to French archaeologists Alain Le Brun and Odile Daune-Le Brun by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides. The award ceremony, held at the Pallas Theatre, recognizes their long-standing, over fifty-year contribution to Cypriot archaeology, particularly through the excavation and study of the Neolithic settlement of Khirokitia. The honored archaeologists, in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities, played a crucial role in highlighting the archaeological site of Khirokitia, creating experimental Neolithic dwellings, and developing educational programs. Their contribution was also significant in the recognition of Khirokitia as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. President Christodoulides emphasized that the award is a sign of gratitude for their contribution and underscores the close relationship between Cyprus and France in the field of cultural heritage. The revival of the award institution, after 14 years, marks the government's determination to promote Cypriot archaeology. During the event, the chairwoman of the Committee, Maria Iakovou, read the rationale for the award, which recognized the scientific integrity and diligent presence of Le Brun and Daune-Le Brun in Cyprus, even after the Turkish Invasion of 1974. The Committee highlighted the rescue and study of archaeological data from the occupied area, such as the Neolithic site of Kastros in the Apostle Andreas, which has been destroyed by the Turkish army.
