Parliament: Discussion on Bill Addressing Disabilities Without Discrimination

The Parliamentary Committee on Labor, Welfare and Social Insurance has begun discussions on a bill that decouples disability benefits from the Minimum Guaranteed Income and treats people with disabilities without discrimination. The discussion will continue next week, where MPs will await responses from the executive branch, according to Committee Chairman Andreas Kavkalias. The bill is considered the result of a significant effort to modernize social benefits and services for the independent living of people with disabilities. However, due to its late submission to Parliament, shortly before the end of the parliamentary session, completing the discussion and passing the bill before April 2nd is considered difficult. MP Andreas Apostolou of the Democratic Party (DIKO) expressed his satisfaction with the bill, as it allows thousands of people with mobility impairments who were not receiving financial support to be included in disability benefits. He stressed the need for the immediate passage of the bill and the provision of additional funds for people with disabilities in the budget. A delay in passing the bill will result in many eligible individuals not being included in disability benefits, while timely passage will provide financial relief to thousands of compatriots with disabilities.
