Parliament: Companies of Turkish Interests Under Scrutiny - Legislation Coming

The Parliamentary Committee of Control has requested the urgent promotion of legislation to address the activities of companies of Turkish interests or other countries that may conflict with the interests of the Republic of Cyprus. The rapporteur of the issue, Marinos Sizopoulos, expressed concern about the number of companies of Turkish interests in Cyprus and the risk of gradual acquisition of real estate in the occupied territories. The Ministry of Commerce, Energy and Industry is preparing legislation that will give the Registrar of Companies the power to reject the registration of companies for reasons of national interest. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that there is coordination to address the issue, while the Department of Lands and Surveys is working on amendments to the legislation on the acquisition of real estate by foreigners. So far, no purchases of real estate by such companies have been identified.
