€1 Billion Needed for School Infrastructure in Cyprus, €35 Million Allocated

The needs for school infrastructure in Cyprus are estimated at €1 billion, while state funds allocated amount to €35 million. This was stated by the head of the Technical Services Department of the Ministry of Education to the Parliamentary Committee on Education. The implementation of projects depends on the approval of the development budget by the Ministry of Finance. At the same time, work on seismic upgrades is pending for 78 schools, while construction costs are constantly increasing. Furthermore, the expansion of compulsory pre-primary education has created a need for prefabricated classrooms, which, however, hinder the construction of new buildings. School boards report needing at least €500,000 to €1 million annually for maintenance alone. The budget for school infrastructure has decreased significantly compared to 2011, despite a recent increase.
