Limited Hiring of People with Disabilities in Cyprus' Public Sector

Only 389 people with disabilities have been hired in the wider public sector in Cyprus from 2010 to 2024, of which 291 in the Education Service and 44 in the Public Service. The figures were presented at a joint session of the House Education and Labour Committees, where MPs requested clarification on the implementation of legislation providing for 10% of hires for people with disabilities. Representatives of the Department of Social Integration of Persons with Disabilities (DKEA) explained that hires are made only if candidates meet the criteria and are deemed suitable for the positions. The Cyprus Confederation of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (KYSOA) highlighted the deviation from the 10% target and called for a broader review of the criteria, while the Public Service Commission (PSC) and the Educational Service Commission (ESC) reported that many applications are rejected due to incomplete requirements. The discussion highlighted the need to improve the implementation of legislation and address obstacles preventing the employment of people with disabilities.
