Outrage Over Brutal Treatment of Turtle by Community Council Employees in Cyprus

Published January 13, 2026, 21:09

A shocking video depicting the brutal mistreatment of a turtle in Chloraka, Paphos, has sparked outrage in Cyprus and abroad. Four men, later identified as employees of the Chloraka Community Council, are seen in the video hitting the turtle on land in a inhumane manner. The Police arrested the perpetrators, aged 23, 28, 48 and 59, and charged them in writing with public nuisance, as the autopsy showed the turtle was already dead before the abuse. Nevertheless, the video has provoked strong reactions and condemnations from the Environmental Commissioner, the Ecologists' Movement and volunteer organizations. The Fisheries Department emphasized that there is a specific procedure that must be followed when a dead turtle is found, such as the use of gloves and appropriate bags. Animal volunteers are calling for the dismissal and criminal prosecution of the employees for the abuse of the turtle. The incident highlights the need for stricter legislation and better enforcement of laws to protect animals in Cyprus. Raising public awareness and educating about the value of wildlife are also crucial to prevent similar incidents in the future.
