VIDEO: Shark Spotted for the First Time in the Icy Waters of Antarctica

A shark, identified as a sleeper shark, has been filmed for the first time in the icy waters of Antarctica, surprising the scientific community. The video, captured in January 2025, shows the fish, estimated to be 3-4 meters long, moving at a depth of 490 meters where the temperature is just 1.27 degrees Celsius. The camera, belonging to the Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Centre, was positioned near the Antarctic Peninsula. Scientists note that there was no previous recorded presence of a shark in the Antarctic Ocean and that climate change may be driving sharks into colder waters. However, it is possible that sleeper sharks have lived there for a long time without being detected due to the region's isolation.
