Controlled Burn Successfully Conducted on the Outskirts of Machairas Forest

The Forestry Department announced the successful implementation of a controlled burn on the outskirts of Machairas Forest, in the 'Maratheftis' area. This action, repeated for the second consecutive year, was carried out within the framework of the SEMEDFIRE project, co-funded by the 'Horizon Europe' program. The aim of the controlled burn is to prevent and limit the risk of a large fire, as in the event of a fire, there is an increased likelihood of rapid spread towards the forest. The areas selected for the controlled burn are determined based on specific criteria and due to the increased fire risk they present, even adjacent to private plots. This practice is an internationally recognized and scientifically proven measure to reduce fuel load. The Forestry Department emphasizes that controlled burns are planned and fully controlled interventions, implemented with strict safety measures and continuous supervision, without any cause for public concern. The action contributes to the protection of human lives, property, and the natural environment. The implementation of this method is part of the Forestry Department's overall strategy for the prevention and management of forest fires, with an emphasis on fuel management in critical zones. The Forestry Department is committed to continuing the implementation of the method in all forest districts until the end of April, as part of the country's broader fire protection strategy.
