Venice: Hundreds of Fish Washed Ashore on Streets – See the Reason

An unusual phenomenon occurred in Venice on January 31st, as hundreds of fish were washed ashore on the streets due to high tide. The fish, which normally live in the canals, seek refuge from the cold temperatures of the lagoon during the winter and find food on the canal bed. This phenomenon repeats every year between January and February. Researchers from the Museum of Natural History and the University of Ca’ Foscari explain that the fish are a species that can adapt to different salinity levels. The high tide pushes them into the flooded streets, where they remain until winter subsides and they return to the lagoon. This phenomenon does not cause concern, as it is part of the natural life cycle of the fish.
