Venezuela: At Least 80 Political Prisoners Released

At least 80 political prisoners have been released in Venezuela, as part of a broader release process underway under pressure from Washington. The non-governmental organization Foro Penal announced the release, while its director, Alfredo Romero, stated that more releases may follow during the day. The interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, had earlier reported that 626 prisoners had been released, but without providing a specific timeline for completing the process. However, Foro Penal has so far confirmed the release of only 156 political prisoners since the start of the process on January 8. Rodríguez announced that she will contact the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, tomorrow to request that the UN verify the lists of names of those released so far.
