Varhelyi: Rules are Strict - All Animals Must Be Culled

European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Oliver Varhelyi, stated that the full implementation of EU rules is the only way to quickly overcome the foot-and-mouth disease crisis in Cyprus, without significant animal losses and economic damage to farmers. He emphasized that in farms where outbreaks have been detected, all animals must be culled and their meat cannot be used. Mr. Varhelyi assured that the EU will help Cyprus and its farmers, offering compensation for their losses. Commissioner Varhelyi pointed out that the EU has already made vaccines available to the island and has sent a veterinary team that is cooperating with local staff to combat the disease. He stressed the highly contagious nature of foot-and-mouth disease and the need for strict adherence to the rules by everyone, including farmers, movers, and visitors. Mr. Varhelyi expressed his satisfaction with the progress made in implementing the measures and emphasized the importance of ensuring full compliance with EU rules throughout the country. The EU is ready to support Cyprus throughout the crisis.
