Heavy Penalties for Failing to Yield to Emergency Vehicles

Published February 18, 2026, 09:27

The law provides for severe penalties for those who do not yield to emergency vehicles, such as ambulances, police cars, and fire trucks, when they are moving with flashing lights and sirens. Non-compliance carries a prison sentence of up to one year or a fine of up to €3,000, or both. The Police will delete any potential violation records from the Photo-labeling System, upon request from drivers. A delay in the arrival of an emergency vehicle can have fatal consequences, while yielding priority reduces the risk of accidents and allows the vehicle to reach its destination quickly and safely. The legislation requires drivers to stop their vehicle as close as possible to the edge of the road until the emergency vehicle passes.
