Changes to Mobile Speed Camera Operation in Cyprus

New changes to the operation of mobile speed camera units are coming into effect following a law passed by the Parliament. According to MP Stavros Papadouris, these changes aim to prioritize road safety through prevention rather than punishment. The mobile units will now be required to have a lit beacon of a different color than the blue of the Police, making them visible from a distance and avoiding complaints about 'hidden' cameras. Furthermore, the law sets minimum parking distances for cameras from speed limit change points (100 meters on urban roads and 300 meters on highways), giving drivers time to adjust their speed. The cost of installing the beacons is negligible, around 50 euros per vehicle. Mr. Papadouris hopes the Government will accept the political decision and the law will come into effect in three months.
