Valentinos Fakontis: Major Road Projects in Paphos, Taxis, and Traffic Light System

The Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Communications and Works discussed major road projects currently underway in Cyprus, with a focus on Paphos. MP Valentinos Fakontis expressed concern over significant delays in many projects, impacting society. Specifically, the Paphos – Polis Chrysochous road, which began in 2021, is essentially stalled with only 20% completed. Phase B of the project is pending at the Department of Environment for the completion of the Environmental Impact Assessment, while the bidding process for Phase A is being extended by one month. Mr. Fakontis urged the Ministry to expedite procedures. Furthermore, the road upgrade projects for Paphos – Polis Chrysochous are also delayed, with completion now expected in April instead of January 2026. The Chlorakas – Pegia road remains pending, with pending feasibility studies, construction plans, and expropriation procedures, while the call for tenders is expected in 2027. The Committee also discussed the problems facing the taxi industry and the need for potential new licenses. Legislative regulation is pending for the reform of the sector, and the issuance of new licenses will be considered after the submission of the relevant legislative framework. Finally, the implementation of the legislation for the tiered fine for traffic lights was discussed, which was delayed by two years and cost 1.5 million euros for software modification.
