Cyprus Parliament Committee Calls for Increased Student Grants and Income Criteria

The Education Committee of the Parliament discussed the need to increase student grants and income criteria, especially for families with four or more children, following a proposal by ELAM MP Sotiris Ioannou. While there is political will to support the proposal, constitutional issues and doubts about the executive branch's political willingness to implement it have been raised. MPs from various parties, such as DISY and AKEL, expressed their support for increasing the grant and revising the criteria, emphasizing the need to consider the increase in the cost of living and the demographic crisis in Cyprus. It was pointed out that an increase in the budget for student support has been announced, but the relevant bill needs to be submitted to the Parliament immediately for students to benefit from the new data. The Education Committee expressed its readiness to meet frequently to approve the bill.
