Increase in Total Number of Fires by 6.51% Compared to Previous Year

The Fire Service recorded a 6.51% increase in the total number of fires in 2025 compared to the previous year, with financial damages estimated at €134,576,665, mainly due to the large fire in the mountainous region of Limassol. The area of countryside burned increased by 116.99 sq. km compared to 2024. Over 94% of fires are attributed to human factors, such as burning vegetation, deliberate fires, and cigarette butts. An increase in wildfires was observed in January, February, and March due to drought and faulty chimneys, as well as in April due to Easter bonfires. However, a decrease in fires was recorded during the fire prevention period, as a result of prevention campaigns and stricter penalties.
