Foot-and-Mouth Disease: High Probability of Transmission from Occupied Territories, Says Veterinary Association Head

The spread of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus is causing concern, with cases detected in livestock farms in the province of Larnaca. Experts are focusing on vaccinations as the main means of containing the disease, while the origin and route of transmission remain uncertain. The head of the Turkish Cypriot veterinary association, Burak Toskoy, estimates that the probability of transmission from the occupied territories to the free areas is high, although he mentions that there were rumors of the disease's presence in the free areas before it appeared in the occupied territories. In the occupied territories, the vaccination of cattle has been completed, while the vaccination of sheep and goats is underway with a target completion date of March, using vaccines donated by the European Union. The Turkish occupation complicates epidemiological surveillance, as the uncontrolled movement of animals across the Green Line poses a risk of disease spread.
