Foot and Mouth Disease: Three New Cases – In Which Area They Were Recorded

Three new cases of foot and mouth disease have been recorded in the Dromolaxia-Meneou area of Cyprus, bringing the total number of infected units to 49. The Veterinary Services report that they are “at the tip of the iceberg” and continue intensive epidemiological investigations, tracing, sampling, and culling and vaccination measures. The recommendations of the European Commission have been implemented, while vaccinations have covered 98% of cattle and 72% of sheep and goats. So far, approximately 26,800 sheep and goats and 1,742 cattle have been culled, with estimates of further losses. Due to the upcoming Easter period and increased demand for meat, efforts are being made to channel animals from clean units to slaughterhouses safely.
