Turkish Cypriot Vet Claims Rumors of Foot-and-Mouth Disease 'Passing from Free Areas to Occupied Territories'

In the wake of recent worrying developments in livestock farms in the province of Larnaca, where cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been detected, efforts to contain the disease across the island are intensifying. A Turkish Cypriot veterinarian claims rumors that the disease “passed from the free areas to the occupied territories”. Burak Toskoy, head of the Turkish Cypriot Veterinary Association, stated that it remains unknown whether the disease was transmitted from the occupied territories to the free areas or vice versa, but that there are rumors of the disease circulating in both regions. The vaccination of cattle in the occupied territories has been completed, while the vaccination of sheep and goats is in progress, with a target completion date of March. Vaccines donated by the European Union will be used to vaccinate sheep and goats. This donation is a significant financial relief for livestock farmers in the Turkish Cypriot community. Epidemiological surveillance is becoming complex due to the Turkish occupation, as it is difficult to completely prevent the uncontrolled movement of animals and to take all necessary measures along the Green Line. This leaves “windows” open for the unhindered spread of the disease. Turkish Cypriot sources report that controlling the situation is particularly difficult due to the peculiarity of the region. Managing the situation requires close cooperation and coordination between the two communities, as well as support from the European Union.
