Foot-and-Mouth Disease: No New Cases in Larnaca, Compensation Measures to be Discussed by Cabinet

No new cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been detected in the province of Larnaca, which is considered a significant and encouraging development. The cows identified with the virus were culled today, and the culling of sheep and goats will begin tomorrow. Sotiria Georgiou, Senior Veterinary Officer, stated that a proposal has been submitted to the Cabinet for support and compensation measures for farmers. The 'Zenon' Coordination Center has been activated for daily updates and information exchange. 14 disinfection and passage control points have been set up within the 10-kilometer surveillance zone, with another five to be added. A decree has been issued prohibiting hunting and the transport of animals in the affected areas. The arrival of vaccines is expected within the week, following efforts by the Minister of Agriculture in Brussels. The decision on their use will be made after discussion with the experts who will arrive in Cyprus. Assurances were given to protect water and soil during the burial of animals.
