Foot and Mouth Disease in Cyprus: EU Team Arrives – Vaccines Coming, Animal Culling Continues in Larnaca

The situation with foot and mouth disease in Cyprus is escalating with the arrival of a team of experts from the European Union and the expected delivery of vaccines within the week. Animal culling continues in the affected areas of Larnaca, in accordance with EU regulations, even in cases of vaccination. Authorities are seeking the return of 20,000 vaccines from the occupied territories to strengthen the effort to contain the disease. A coordination body has been established to address emerging needs, while checks are being carried out on animal feed and milk to prevent the spread of the virus. The situation appears to have stabilized in the areas where cases have been identified (Oroklini – Aradippou – Livadia), but the source of the contaminated feed remains unknown. There are reports of delays in informing the authorities about the spread of the disease. The Director of Veterinary Services stated that the service was informed by a cattle farmer and not by sheep and goat farmers, despite the fact that they had known about the problem for two weeks. This is attributed to negligence on the part of the livestock farmers and a conscious assumption of risk. The transport of dead animals is carried out by special vehicles that ensure the prevention of virus leakage. Authorities are focusing on limiting cases and preventing further spread of foot and mouth disease, with the next 24 hours considered critical for the course of the epidemic.
