Veterinary Services Await Arrival of Experts to Discuss Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Veterinary services are awaiting the arrival of three experts from the European Commission by tomorrow, Wednesday, to examine the situation with foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus. Senior Veterinary Officer Sotiria Georgiadou stated that the measures to be taken will be discussed. Cyprus did not proceed with early vaccination of animals, as it was free from the virus according to the provisions of the international organization for animal health. After the outbreak on February 20, the organization was informed and the process of sending vaccines began. The Republic of Cyprus does not have control over the situation in the occupied territories, but has taken other measures, such as spraying at checkpoints and informing livestock farmers. An order has been placed for approximately half a million vaccines, and their shipment is expected. Regarding halloumi, the representative of the Veterinary Services assured that there is no problem, as the vaccines will protect the animal population and discussions will be held regarding exported products.
