Foot-and-Mouth Disease: €28 Million Support Package for Livestock Farmers – Minister of Agriculture's Statement

The Council of Ministers approved an additional €24.5 million to support livestock farmers affected by foot-and-mouth disease, bringing the total support package to €28 million, including the €3.5 million advance approved on March 5th. The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, announced that the package includes 9+1 measures, covering not only affected farmers but also the broader support of livestock farming through the establishment of a special committee. The Minister stressed that the Government has maintained a transparent stance regarding the possibility of culling animals, in accordance with European regulations, and that the truth has been communicated to both farmers and Parliament. The Government insists it is following the guidelines of the EU regulation. Regarding potential political or administrative responsibilities, Minister Panagiotou stated that the priority of the political leadership is to support livestock farmers and that any omissions or non-compliance with protocols will be investigated. The emphasis is on providing immediate assistance to farmers. The Minister reiterated the Government's commitment to supporting livestock farmers, emphasizing that this has been done since the beginning of the crisis. This support will continue in the future, with the aim of restoring livestock farming and avoiding further damage.
