Foot-and-Mouth Disease: How the Meat Market is Expected to be Affected

The president of the Pan-Cypriot Butchers Association, Kostas Leivadiotis, appeared reassuring but also realistic regarding the potential impact of the spread of foot-and-mouth disease on the meat market. The size of the impact will depend on the evolution of the situation and the extent of the spread, with potential damages ranging from 1% to 20% or more. The sector is taking measures to ensure a smooth supply of the market and avoid shortages, with the continuation of slaughtering upon approval. Meat and dairy account for approximately 5% of the country's income and are essential goods for nutrition and the economy. Animals destined for slaughter are healthy, and meat is safe when cooked properly. So far, no decline in sales has been recorded, and imports are expected to proceed as normal. An emergency meeting of the House Agriculture Committee has been requested for coordination and decision-making.
