Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Preventing Spread is a Priority - Calls for Presidential Intervention

The spread of foot-and-mouth disease is the primary concern of cattle, goat, and sheep farmers, as well as agricultural organizations in Cyprus. They are calling for immediate support for affected farmers and strict implementation of protocols to prevent further spread of the disease. Goat and sheep farmers emphasize the need for updated preventive measures throughout Cyprus, beyond those already in place, which have been implemented since December 27th. They highlight the importance of stricter monitoring and the implementation of measures that have proven effective in other European countries, limiting the spread to a small radius (10-20 kilometers). The implementation of these measures is considered critical for the protection of both animals and halloumi production. The Pan-Cypriot Cattle Breeders Organization (POB) is seeking compensation for units affected by foot-and-mouth disease and emphasizes the responsibility of all involved parties to comply with protocols. The European Commission is closely monitoring the situation and checks are ongoing.
