Foot-and-Mouth Disease: "They Ordered Vaccines But Don't Know What to Do With Them"

The President of the Agriculture Committee of the Parliament, Yannakis Gavriel, strongly criticized the government's handling of the foot-and-mouth disease issue, citing serious omissions in prevention and an attempt to shift responsibility to farmers. During a discussion, questions were raised that remained unanswered. Mr. Gavriel emphasized that instead of supporting farmers, the government is resorting to the use of the police and failed to take proactive measures to address the crisis. He noted that no government official has taken responsibility for the omissions. The President of the Agriculture Committee also criticized the Director of Veterinary Services for denying the delays and the lack of preventive measures. At the same time, he expressed strong reservations about the vaccine use plan, as clear answers were not given on which animals would be vaccinated and in which areas. With economic damage already significant and thousands of animals facing culling, Mr. Gavriel called for immediate and substantial support for farmers and compensation based on current market prices.
