Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Veterinary Services Actions from the First Case

Following the appearance of the first case of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus, the Veterinary Services immediately activated the Emergency Plan for Category A diseases. Disease Control Centers have been activated and epidemiological investigation procedures, sampling and tracing are being implemented. Strict restriction and biosecurity measures are being imposed in all affected areas, including the prohibition of animal, feed, and medicine movements and grazing. Exceptions are allowed only with the permission of the Veterinary Services for movements to slaughterhouses, feed distribution through approved suppliers, and water transport. The measures vary by zone (infected, protection, surveillance) and the Veterinary Services provide relevant updates to livestock farmers.
