Foot and Mouth Disease: Case Numbers Remain Stable – Cabinet to Decide on New Measures

The number of foot and mouth disease cases in Cyprus remains stable, with 38 livestock units affected. Laboratory tests on samples taken on Saturday showed no new cases, however, the situation is being closely monitored. The management of the problem will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting on Monday, as announced by President Christodoulides. Sotiria Grigoriadou, Senior Veterinary Officer, stressed that the lack of increase in cases is positive, but could be reversed if there are obstacles to the culling of affected animals. President Christodoulides described the moments as difficult and announced that the Cabinet will decide on a specific plan to support livestock farming. The prompt and effective culling of animals is considered critical to limiting the spread of the disease.
