Foot and Mouth Disease: New Case in Dromolaxia

A new case of foot and mouth disease has been confirmed in Dromolaxia, bringing the total number of infected units to 46, with 43 in the province of Larnaca and 3 in Nicosia. So far, approximately 23,000 sheep and goats have died, with losses continuing, and 1,712 cattle have also perished. Around 4,000 sheep and goats and 30 cattle are expected to be culled, with this number potentially increasing due to young animals and births. 98% of the cattle population and 72% of the sheep and goat population have been vaccinated, with the second vaccination in the province of Larnaca underway (23% of cattle and 2.6% of sheep and goats). Simultaneously, sampling, tracing, and laboratory tests continue throughout Cyprus, with new results expected soon. The checks cover the 3 and 10 kilometer zones, as well as the entire country. A suspected unit in Lakatamia proved negative, while another case remains under investigation. The transmission of the virus is not primarily due to airborne spread, but to mechanical transfer via people, clothing, shoes, vehicles, and animal feed. There is concern about the spread through movements, such as the case in Dali where animals from an infected unit in Larnaca were transported for slaughter. The Aθηένου area remains clear due to the strict restrictive measures implemented, such as the ban on movements and intensive spraying. Control zones have been formed around each case, creating a complex grid that makes management difficult. Authorities hope that Aθηένου will remain outside the infection due to its significant livestock population.
