Foot-and-Mouth Disease: EU Experts Arriving in Cyprus by Wednesday

Three experts from the European Commission are expected to arrive in Cyprus by Wednesday to assess the situation regarding foot-and-mouth disease. Senior Veterinary Officer Sotiria Georgiadou stated that measures will be discussed on-site and in detail. Cyprus did not proceed with early vaccination of animals, as, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health, countries free from the virus do not vaccinate. After the outbreak on February 20th, the Organisation was informed, and procedures for ordering vaccines were initiated. The Republic of Cyprus has no control over the situation in the occupied territories. Measures such as spraying at checkpoints and informing livestock farmers have been taken, and around half a million vaccines have been ordered. The representative of the Veterinary Services noted that vaccines are a solution to contain the spread of the virus and prevent its spread to other areas, affecting Cypriot products. Australia had already accepted Cypriot products after consultations.
