Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Cases Rise to 11 in Cyprus, 13,000 Animals Affected

Eleven cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been recorded in the province of Larnaca, Cyprus, with over 13,000 animals affected. The process of culling and burying infected animals has begun. The spread of the virus appears to be linked to its presence in some units for approximately two weeks before the confirmation of the first case. New cases are located within the initial 10-kilometer surveillance zone, however, exclusion and spraying points have been expanded. Extensive meetings are being held between involved services to coordinate efforts, and the arrival of a team of veterinary experts from the European Union is expected. Authorities emphasize that the virus does not affect public health and the priority is to protect livestock.
