Foot-and-Mouth Disease / All Mobilized: Racing to Save What Can Be Saved - Decisions of the Critical Meeting

A large-scale meeting was held at the 'ZENON' Coordination Center of the Center for Coordination of Research and Rescue (CCSR), with the participation of the Ministers of Agriculture, Justice and Defense, as well as representatives of all relevant government services, for operational coordination and strengthening measures to address the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. So far, cases have been identified in eleven livestock farms in the areas of Troulli, Oroklini, Livadia and Aradippou, affecting approximately 14,000 animals. The process of culling and burying infected animals has already begun, while disinfection systems have been installed in the affected areas and strict biosecurity measures are being implemented. The competent services are operating on the basis of national and European protocols. The arrival of experts from the European Union is expected to provide technical support and assist in the further management of the situation, including the vaccination process. A special national plan has been activated to address the situation, as well as the 24-hour operation of a Crisis Management Center at the 'ZENON' Coordination Center. All involved services are participating in the Center, with the aim of unified operational management and continuous coordination of actions. The State assures that it will stand by all those affected, with support measures that will cover the primary sector as a whole and especially livestock farmers. Despite the challenges, exports of Cypriot products continue as normal.
