Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak in Cyprus: Farms Quarantined

Foot-and-mouth disease has been detected in two large goat and sheep farms in Oroklini, following its initial outbreak in a cattle farm in Livadia. Veterinary Services have expanded the restriction and surveillance zone and are implementing an emergency action plan. In Livadia, where the first outbreak was identified, 260 cows will be culled and buried to prevent the spread of the virus. There are 23 livestock farms with goats and sheep around the cattle farm, which are also under surveillance. A 21-day quarantine has been imposed on the goat and sheep farms in Oroklini. Authorities are investigating all possible causes of transmission, including the possibility of feed from the occupied territories. Farmers will only be compensated if they have taken preventive biosecurity measures. Foot-and-mouth disease does not affect humans but is highly contagious among cloven-hoofed animals.
