Foot-and-Mouth Disease: EU Experts Rushed to Cyprus to Review Situation – Strict Biosecurity Measures in Place for Farmers

The Veterinary Services of Cyprus announced the urgent arrival of a team of experts from the European Commission to assess the situation regarding Foot-and-Mouth Disease. At the same time, they remind farmers of their obligation to implement strict biosecurity measures, such as fencing farms, disinfecting vehicles and people, using personal protective equipment and checking the origin of feed. The measures also include cleaning and disinfecting farms, removing manure and monitoring livestock for suspected symptoms. Farmers are urged to immediately inform the Services in case of any suspicion. In consultation with other departments, spraying will take place in specific areas, while others will be closed off. Press officers will receive daily updates from the Director of Veterinary Services. These measures aim to protect Cyprus's livestock from the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, a disease that can have serious economic consequences.
