Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Possible Transmission from Feed from Occupied Territories Under Investigation

Authorities are investigating the possibility that the transmission of foot-and-mouth disease to a livestock unit in Livadia may be due to feed from the occupied territories. The director of Veterinary Services, Christodoulos Pipis, emphasized that feed is a serious way of spreading pathogens. The process of culling the 260 animals will begin after the management of the carcasses is arranged, with possible options being cremation or burial in suitable areas. The owner of the unit will be compensated if they have complied with EU regulations regarding safety and disinfection measures. Regarding vaccinations, the decision will depend on the spread of the virus to neighboring farms. Authorities reassure the public that there is no reason for panic regarding public health, but call on livestock farmers and other professionals in the sector to operate responsibly. The situation is considered very serious and requires increased attention. At the same time, livestock units have been quarantined and an emergency action plan has been implemented to limit the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.
