Foot-and-Mouth Disease: National Plan Activated - 24-Hour Coordination Center

A national plan to combat foot-and-mouth disease has been activated in Cyprus, following a meeting of the Ministers of Agriculture, Justice and Defense. Cases have been identified in eleven livestock farms, affecting approximately 14,000 animals. The process of culling and burying infected animals has begun, as well as the disinfection of areas. A 24-hour Crisis Management Center is operating at the “ZENON” Coordination Center, with the participation of all relevant services. The arrival of experts from the European Union is expected to provide technical support and assistance with vaccination. The government assures that it will support affected farmers, while despite the challenges, exports of Cypriot products continue as normal. The situation worsened after the outbreak of cases in the occupied territories in December, when preventive measures were taken.
