Foot-and-Mouth Disease: "We Are Still at the Beginning" – Control Could Take Up to Six Months

Senior Veterinary Officer Sotiria Georgiadou stated that Cyprus is still at the beginning of tackling the foot-and-mouth disease crisis, estimating that complete eradication of the virus could take up to six months, depending on the progress of vaccinations. Cyprus will return to its status as a foot-and-mouth disease-free country a few months after the complete disappearance of the virus. While the virus does not always lead to death, it causes a significant reduction in milk production and difficulty in animal recovery, leading to mass vaccinations. The spread of the virus would be catastrophic if left unchecked, with a potential 50% reduction in milk production. There are economic consequences for exports, but halloumi is exempt due to the boiling process during its production. The culling of animals is carried out to ensure the quality and adequacy of the livestock.
