MPs Criticize Minister of Agriculture for Absence from Committee Meeting on Foot-and-Mouth Disease

MPs are criticizing the Minister of Agriculture for her absence from yesterday's meeting of the Agriculture Committee regarding foot-and-mouth disease. Committee Chairman, Yannakis Gavriel, and MP Christos Orphanides described the Minister's absence as incomprehensible and expressed their disappointment at her preference to remain at a meeting at the Coordination Center for Research and Rescue, rather than attending the committee. The MPs expressed their concern about the lack of a plan to deal with the disease and the absence of immediate support for livestock farmers. The authorities were criticized for sending the police to take statements instead of providing psychological support to livestock farmers. The MPs questioned why measures were not taken earlier, such as the involvement of the National Guard and the establishment of a coordinating center, given that the disease had already appeared in the occupied territories in December. In addition, they complained that their questions at the meeting remained unanswered, and the discussion was fruitless. Mr. Orphanides stressed that the Minister should have respected the Parliament and attended the meeting, while expressing his disappointment with her absence and the sending of the Director-General and Director of Veterinary Services to answer the questions of the MPs.
