Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak: Emergency Measures Activated in Cyprus

An emergency meeting was held at the 'ZENON' Coordination Center, involving the Ministers of Agriculture, Justice, and Defense, along with representatives from relevant government agencies, to address the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus. Cases have been identified in 11 livestock units across various regions, affecting approximately 14,000 animals. The process of culling and burying infected animals has begun, along with disinfection measures and strict biosecurity protocols. The meeting decided to activate a special national action plan and establish a 24/7 Crisis Management Center, with the participation of all involved services. The aim is to coordinate efforts and effectively manage the crisis under the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture. Furthermore, experts from the European Union are expected to arrive to provide technical support and assistance with vaccination. The competent authorities are operating based on national and European protocols for managing contagious zoonotic diseases. The government assures support for those affected, especially livestock farmers, with measures covering the primary sector. Despite the challenges, Cypriot product exports continue as normal, including milk for halloumi cheese.
