Foot and Mouth Disease: Vehicle Disinfection Measures Implemented at Checkpoints

Vehicle disinfection measures have been implemented at checkpoints between the free and occupied areas of Cyprus as a preventative measure against foot and mouth disease. "Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources" Hussein Chavush inspected the Pergamos and Strovilia crossing points, while the "Mayor" of Pergamos, Bulent Bebek, confirmed the disinfection of all vehicles. Mr. Chavush stated that the first case was detected in the occupied territories and is linked to contacts between the animal's owner and the free areas. He also accused the Republic of Cyprus of delayed notification regarding the presence of the virus, which, according to him, contributed to the spread of the disease. The Turkish Cypriot side has requested and received 10,000 doses of vaccine from the Republic of Cyprus, with the remaining 10,000 doses expected to be delivered soon. Mr. Chavush emphasized the high transmissibility of the virus, which is exacerbated by weather conditions, and stressed the importance of animal vaccination as a preventative measure. The spread of foot and mouth disease poses a serious risk to livestock and the economy of Cyprus. Prevention and vaccination measures are crucial to limit the spread of the disease and protect animals and farmers. Cooperation between the two communities is essential for the effective management of foot and mouth disease. Early notification, information sharing, and joint action can help limit the spread of the disease and protect the health of animals and humans.
