Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Concern in Nicosia - 75 Farms on Alert

Concerns are rising in Nicosia due to its proximity to areas where cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been recorded. The Municipality of South Nicosia, with 75 farms and approximately 40,000 animals, has taken precautionary measures in collaboration with local farmers. However, Mayor Stavros Hadjiyiannis expresses concern about the division of responsibilities, as only one of the four livestock areas falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Agriculture. The Mayor calls on the Department of Agriculture to take overall responsibility for tackling the crisis, emphasizing that the distinction between areas under the Ministry's jurisdiction and others is unjustified in such a situation. Despite the Department's initial offer to cover the cost of an automated spraying system only in areas under its jurisdiction, the Mayor stresses the need for immediate and comprehensive coverage of all areas, with farmers willing to contribute financially to expedite the procedures. A significant issue is also the lack of coordination with the Veterinary Services, as there has been no communication so far. The Mayor expresses hope that communication will not be necessary due to new cases. The geographical proximity to already affected areas, such as Aradippou and Athienou, intensifies concerns about the potential spread of the disease. The Municipality has already set up a Viber group to coordinate farmers, while efforts continue to strengthen preventive measures and address the crisis. The situation is being closely monitored, with an emphasis on making quick decisions and effective collaboration between all stakeholders.
