Foot-and-Mouth Disease / Same Virus Strain in Cases Detected in Larnaca as Those in the Occupied Territories (VIDEO)

The veterinary services of Cyprus are on high alert after the identification of the foot-and-mouth disease virus in a livestock unit in Larnaca. Laboratory tests confirmed that it is the SAT 1 serotype, which is exactly the same as the one that has appeared in the occupied territories. Following the recommendation of European Union experts, the immediate start of vaccination of 10,000 animals within a 3-kilometer radius of the affected areas was decided. The next two weeks are considered crucial for the development of antibodies in animals. Despite ongoing sampling, no new cases have been detected in recent hours, however, the authorities remain vigilant. The arrival of 529,000 doses of vaccine from the European Commission is expected.
