Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak: Over 13,000 Animals to be Culled

A serious outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has occurred in Cyprus, with cases detected in 11 livestock units, 10 of which concern goats and sheep and one a beef unit. Due to the spread of the disease, more than 13,000 animals will be culled in an effort to contain further transmission. Sotiria Georgiades, Spokesperson for the Veterinary Services, stated that sampling continues and the process of culling and burying infected animals is underway. Fortunately, the spread appears to be limited to specific villages.
