Foot-and-Mouth Disease: 11 Cases - Culling of Animals Begins

As of today, 11 cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been recorded in the province of Larnaca, one in a cattle unit and 10 in goat and sheep units. The number of affected animals exceeds 13,000, and the process of culling and burying infected animals has begun. The spread of the virus is linked to the delayed recognition of it in some units. New cases are located within the initial 10-kilometer surveillance zone. A meeting was held at the Ministry of Agriculture to coordinate the involved services. Sampling continues, and the arrival of a team of veterinary experts is expected from Tuesday. The virus does not affect public health, but management focuses on protecting livestock and animal products. Suspicions of illegal movements from the occupied territories are being investigated.
