Organizations Call for Support for Affected Farmers and Intervention Regarding Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Representatives of cattle, goat and sheep farmers, and agricultural organizations stressed the need to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease and called for support for affected farmers. They also requested the immediate issuance of updated measures by the Veterinary Services for all farms throughout Cyprus, to ensure effective prevention of virus transmission. Goat and sheep farmers report that they are implementing the measures given by the Veterinary Services following a meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture on December 27, but are awaiting new, stricter measures to prevent the spread of the virus to other provinces. They emphasize the need for stricter control and the implementation of stricter measures, as is done in other European countries, where the disease was limited to a small radius. The General Director of the Pan-Cypriot Cattle Breeders Organization (POAC) requested compensation for the units facing problems due to foot-and-mouth disease and emphasized the responsibility of all stakeholders to comply with safety protocols. It is noted that the issue is also being monitored by the European Commission. The POAC has informed producers about foot-and-mouth disease and has distributed material for the recognition of the symptoms of the disease. Vaccination is not considered necessary at present, as the situation is considered limited.
