The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it is conducting rescue efforts after the loss of a US KC-135 refueling aircraft in Iraq. The KC-135 is a critical support aircraft for the US Air Force, capable of refueling other aircraft in the air, extending their operational range. The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, based on the Boeing 707, has been in service for over 60 years but remains a significant part of the US military fleet. The aircraft uses the “flying boom” system for refueling, and boasts impressive specifications, including a length of 41.5 meters, a maximum speed of 930 km/h, and a maximum fuel load of 90 tons. KC-135s have been used in many major military operations and are gradually being replaced by the newer Boeing KC-46 Pegasus, but are expected to remain in service until the 2040s.
