Cyprus Court Hears Testimony in Case of 14-Year-Old's Suicide

The trial concerning the suicide of 14-year-old Stylianos Konstantinou continued with testimonies from three police officers. A key point of today's hearing was the challenge by the lawyer of the Social Welfare Services (SWS) officer regarding the clarity of the indictment. The lawyer argued that the legislation establishing the officer's duty, the omission of which is allegedly a crime, was not sufficiently specified. The Prosecution opposed this, stating that the legislation emerges from the case's evidence. The judge rejected the lawyer's request, ruling that the charges were adequately formulated. The indictment includes a total of 218 charges against 11 individuals, including the child's parents and SWS officers. Charges against the father relate to violence, while those against the mother concern failure to report incidents of violence. The SWS officers are accused of negligence of duty. During today's hearing, an electronic record of a complaint filed by the boy's mother in 2009 was submitted, detailing threats from her husband.
